Designing With Grace - an interview with our graphic designer Bethan Lientie

Bethan, our graphic designer, has been on the team with Rachel and Claire since the very start when she was approached to help design the brand and create our adorable illustrations of Grace, our very own flower girl character.

We’ve asked Bethan some questions about her work here in this blog as well as showing some of her amazing and beautiful artwork.

We've also slipped in a few questions for any Brides out there thinking of hiring a graphic designer for their wedding design....

1) Why did you start drawing and what do you love about being a graphic designer?

As long as I remember - it's always been an obsession for me, ever since school I've made a habit of taking a sketch pad around with me everywhere, and I spend a lot of my free time drawing. I love being a graphic designer as it allows me to be creative in my every day work, whilst also making a regular income!

 2) Where did you study?

Half of my learning was in England, and half in Wales, so it's been a bit all over the place. I did my GCSE's up there and then studied the International Baccalaureate at college. I went on to complete an Mdes in graphic design at Sheffield Hallam for the next four years, and after moving around a few places, I'm now settled in Lincoln doing freelance design and illustration.

3) Any influences or major style inspiration from other artists or styles?
From the age of about 12 I got more seriously in to improving my drawing skills, and did this mostly by copying pages and illustrations from manga, so there's definitely a bit of a Japanese influence on my style.  But for painting, I love game concept art, so tried to learn to paint digitally in that style. Stanley Lau (Artgerm) is the epitome of this for me, I hope I can reach his level one day.

4) What is your dream job?

In freelancing, any kind of concept art is a dream for me. That's what I've loved about working on the Grace character, there were some specifics to stick to, but I still had a lot of free reign to work out the character and style, so it's been a lot of fun to work on.

5) What questions should brides or grooms ask graphic designers before engaging them?

I would say work out what you want as solidly as you can before approaching the designer, and it will make the process a lot smoother. If you can, put together something like a Pinterest board of a visual style you like, it will help make sure everyone is on the same page.

If you are going to be organising printing, talk to your printer first to find out what format it needs to be in then relay this to the designer, or you can look for a company that will sort out both for you. Also set a budget beforehand, but you can also ask the designer what their rate is.

I love that With Grace has given me a lot of freedom around the designs that has allowed me to be more creative with the brief, and they have been so friendly and easy to work with.

They are a very down to earth and wholesome company, and I think we are on the same page most of the time, so working for them has been a very pleasant experience!
